A Brief History of Banoffee Pie
As most of us dessert lovers know, banoffee pie is a delicious dish generally made up of a crushed biscuit base, chilled caramel (the toffee part), topped with slices of bananas and cream and usually finished off with a dusting of melted chocolate or shavings. This article looks at the history of this wonderful concoction.
Many people accept that the dessert’s creators were the owner and chef of a small restaurant in England called The Hungry Monk. They were called Ian Dowding and Nigel Mackenzie and they came up with the recipe in 1972.
As legend has it, Dowding first thought of the idea during his time in the US. He was introduced to a recipe called “Blum’s Coffee Toffee Pie” which basically was made up of a toffee filling with a coffee flavoured cream on top. The trouble with this recipe was that it was incredibly difficult to make, and rarely came out as the chef wanted – it was either too soggy or hard as a rock.
When back from the states, Dowding and Mackenzie worked with the idea and used bananas and toffee. They originally created the word “banoffi” which has slowly turned into “banoffee” and has even found it’s way into the English language, used to describe anything with a banana and toffee flavour.
So with their new recipe they added it to The Hungry Monk’s menu. It was instantly popular – so popular in fact that people started to make table bookings only if the new dessert was on the menu. It in fact became so popular that they dared not remove it from the menu at all!
Over the next few years Dowding said that other restaurants started to make similar desserts and sell it to compete with The Hungry Monk. They also started to hear rumours that the dessert had taken off in America and restaurants there were beginning to sell it. Then rumours from Australia – it had slowly started creeping around the world. During the late 1970s it was also a highly popular dish in India.
In the early 1990s several supermarkets began to sell banoffee pie, calling it an American pie. In an attempt to settle any argument about where the pudding originated from Mackenzie offered a prize of 10,000 to anyone who could produce a menu with the dessert listed that was from pre-1972. As far as I know, nobody has been able to.
So since it’s humble beginnings in 1972 banoffee pie has spread to the four corners of the globe and is sold throughout thousands of restaurants, and remains a world favourite.
