Campfire Desserts Which are Tasty and Easy
Most people love camping and cooking is a key part of the fun. Easy meals are ideal if you want to have fun camping, since elaborate dinners are best made at home in the kitchen. There are lots of savory bean stews and meat casseroles you can make but what about campfire desserts? Get yourself a bag of marshmallows and you are in for a treat!
What is a Smore?
A smore, or s’more, is a layer of chocolate and marshmallow sandwiched between two Graham crackers and the name is abbreviated from “give me some more!” The first recipe for smores is found in the 1927 Girl Scout handbook.
They are made by roasting a marshmallow until it starts to go golden brown, then pinching it off the stick using a pair of Graham crackers with some chocolate on. Some people like to add peanut butter too.
You can often get marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers packaged together in supermarkets in the summer months, especially for making smores. You can also get indoor smore kits which are a bit like fondue pots.
It is possible to make microwave smores but you might not like the way the graham crackers go soft when using this method. You can also get smore flavored Pop-Tarts, which are graham cracker flavored crusts filled with a chocolate and marshmallow center if you want the smore flavor in a hurry.
Making Tasty Smores Indoors
Indoor smores are ideal if you are not camping but you still fancy this type of sweet, sticky treat. There are many different smores recipes to try. Peanut butter, golden grahams, milk, chocolate, jello pudding, ice cream sauce and more are all popular ingredients for making indoor smores. All you need to do is combine the ingredients and chill the mixture until it sets. You will still have the same chocolate and marshmallow flavor as when you make regular smores but the method for making indoor smores is quite different.
More Campfire Treats
Campfire food should be easy and one simple idea is to take some cake mix and some fresh oranges with you. Cut the tops off the oranges and remove the insides. Make up the cake mix and use it to stuff the oranges, and then wrap them in aluminum foil, with their lids back on. Bake them for about five minutes over a campfire and the cakes will cook inside the oranges. For a fruitier flavor, replace some of the liquid in the cake mix recipe with orange juice from the oranges.
If cooking is difficult or if the weather takes a turn for the worse, it is always a good idea to have some snacks to hand and this is where jello recipes are useful. Have you ever made finger jello? This is when you mix boiling water with the jello powder but omit the cold water. You can cut the resulting jello into pieces and eat it with your fingers. Because finger jello is quite firm, it is not sticky.
Raspberry pavlova is a delicious way to eat up fresh raspberries. It is sort of like a shortcake, but it is lighter and more refreshing. Pile your berries high on this stack of meringues and top with homemade whipped cream. You can keep your meringues stacked with a dollop of vanilla pudding.
