Gaining A Better Understanding Of Organic Foods

Organic food is a growing trend and a good one if the food is actually organic like it says. The meat labels can be misleading though.

Once you see a label on a food package that states it is organic, you believe that it actually is and purchase it. Seeing this label, you assume it is chemical free and was grown the best way possible to be considered a healthy product.

You may be a little safer with organic vegetables, meat is a different story. The meat industry may say one thing but it may not actually be the case. We will discuss this issue a little further.

For instance, the USDA states that any wild fish can be considered organic. Even though, the fish may still contain harmful chemicals or mercury.

The USDA is quiet on the guidelines on organic meat products when it comes to the welfare standards and living conditions of the raised animals for organic meat.

In this guidelines, there are stipulations on the kind of food these animals can be fed. This way the guarantee of the products coming chemical and antibiotics free, as well as free of hormones and other substances are there.

The best thing to do when you are out shopping for organic food when it comes down to making a decision on organic or non organic food products, then it is still best to go with the organic product. If you happen to be concerned about the diet of an animal and the overall health and well being, then you should look for high welfare labels such as RSPCA labels and biodynamic certificates, these are just a step above organic.

The sale of organic meat requires two changes: the forwardness of regulatory terms and the awareness of customers as to what these labels really mean. If the customer doesn’t think “organic” means what they think it means, then the pressure can go a long way to fix that.
