Growing Basil with LED Grow Lights
Growing basil is great! This often used cooking herb is sweet and is a member of the mint family. There are a lot of medicinal uses for members of the mint family as well. Basil is grown well in warm climates so if the weather is cool outside, it’s best to wait.
Finding seeds to start your basil growing is easy. They can be collected from your garden or bought from the store. Growing from seeds is usually easy. If you live in a cooler climate area, it might make more sense to try to grow your basil in your home. You can substitute sunlight with a variety of grow lights including led grow lights which are efficient and will save you money in the long run.
Start off by planting your basil plants about 7-10 inches apart. Basil likes soil that drains quickly so keep the soil light and in a warm location. Richer soil can produce more successive crops that can be transplanted to other locations including indoors. Taking your growing indoors will mean fresh basil during the winter time.
Even though growing outdoors usually produces the best basil, not everyone lives in a climate that is favorable to this plant. So many people use hydroponics and led grow lights to grow indoors. When doing so, remember that basil likes to be near a south facing window. Also try to keep it away from any heat vents that might dry it out. If you’re set on trying to grow outdoors, consider a cold frame if the weather is chilly.
If you want to gather up seeds for your next round of basil plants, you can do so by letting your plant flower and eventually grow seed pods. These can be used to grow more plants. Do know that when a stem starts to flower, the leaf production on that stem will stop. So if you want to keep harvesting more leaves, snip of any signs of flowers and you’ll keep your plant producing.
Growing with traditional grow lights like MH or HPS lights means you’ll need to have some sort of cooling system in place. Otherwise, hot lights will dry out your plant and damage the leaves. Some people find that a fan is enough to keep them cool while others opt for a more sophisticated cooling system. Others choose to use led grow lights which don’t produce as much heat and thus, can be placed closer to the plant.
Led grow lights also have the benefit of being able to target the spectrums of light that the plants actually use. Red and blue lights make up the most of led grow lights and by doing so, keep these lights efficient. Only the lights that plants use for photosynthesis are used. Led lights also require less electricity with is an added plus when using these lights.
Growing basil isn’t that hard. In fact, it’s easy enough that everyone who wants basil year round should have it. Just find a good spot in your home (unless you’re growing outdoors) and make sure your plants have enough light. Use quick draining soil or hydroponics and you’ll be all set. Fresh basil year round is a wonderful thing to have.
