How Our Modern Version Of Milkshake Came About
Somewhere around 1850 was born the native version of milkshake, an eggnog mixture topped up with frothy alcohol. This original version of milkshake did not resemble the later day milkshakes in any way.
Well if the frothy alcohol mixture did not resemble the current day milkshakes, then how did the milkshakes come into being? To know this, we must first trace the history of ice creams. History has it that ice creams came to be added into milkshakes only around 1920s.
Milkshake was born in the counters of Walgreen where a manager was behind the Walgreen soda fountain trying to blend a new concoction as an experiment. He happened to use one of the mixers, which had been used to mix malted milk and put in a few scoops of ice cream. Thus was born the fantastic new creamy nectar called milkshake.
That manager must have been in some mood that day and must have made up his mind to create something new. It is quite probably that he must have tried to come up with many recopies before he finally settled on this one, after several trials and errors. Poor customers, they must have been the Ginny pigs for the experiment.
Once people came to like milkshake, the demand started growing rapidly and people everywhere began queuing up for milkshakes at every soda fountain counter. Walgreen grew their business and from a small drug store, they became a national chain store over a decade.
Thus began the story of milkshake, which captured entire America’s heart with its rich and creamy taste and flavors. Milkshakes became the national rage and could be found in every little corner shop on streets besides the most expensive hotels that offered milkshakes as a part of their menu.
Milkshakes popularity seems to continue to grow over the years. Even after several decades the popularity has not waned. The simple flavors and concoctions of yester years like plain vanilla, chocolate and strawberry has been replaced by very many varieties and combination of flavors. New recipes are being tried every time using new ingredients.
No matter where Milkshakes reach in terms of modifications to the recipes, the credit will always belong to the Walgreen soda fountain manager who was out there to try something new to please his customers.
