Make sure that you have a brew pot that will hold at least 4 or 5 gallons of fluid. Anything smaller and you will be at risk of getting burned if the pot boils over. You will need a strong pail or other container to use as the fermenter. You will use a funnel and a strainer to put the fluid from the pot into the fermenter.
You will need a siphon to pour the liquid into the bottles. An auto-siphon can be purchased or a piece of plastic tubing can be used. Be sure to have clean bottles and a capper so that the tops will be sure to be tight. A thermometer will also be needed because different stages of the process require that a specific temperature be maintained.
Having clean, sterile equipment is a must. Otherwise you risk ruining the batch of brew with bacteria. Using a cleaner such as bleach is effective, but you should steer clear of anything abrasive, such as cleanser. It may scratch the surface leaving hidden areas where bacteria can thrive.
The first step is to make wort. 3 gallons of water should be brought to a boil in the brew pot. Once boiling, it can be removed from the heat so that the malt extract can be stirred in. Once it has dissolved completely, return the pot to the heat and bring it to a boil again. Once all of the protein has formed clumps and is on the bottom of the pot, add your hops. Then allow it to boil for approximately an hour.
The next step is to ferment your beer. For this process you will need to use the funnel and strainer and pour all of the wort into the fermenter. Make sure that the wort is at room temperature before you add your yeast. Add the yeast into the liquid in the container that you are using for fermenting, stir gently. Be sure to seal this container tightly. Place the fermenter in a cool, dark area where direct sunlight cannot hit it. Check it every few days. Fermenting can take a week to 10 days to complete. If you see that the yeast has all settled at the bottom of the container, then it is finished.
