How To Properly Clean A Butcher Block

A butcher block is an extremely useful kitchen accessory to have. The block is made from wood materials, and it is designed for you to use as a cutting block. However, even though the block has a variety of uses, the most important thing that you need to be aware of is the cleanliness of its surface.

If you fail to not clean your block between every use you are going to end up putting yourself in a bad predicament. Not only will your food get cross contaminated, but you also risk the chance of becoming ill due to the mixture of foods on these blocks.

The best way to clean and sanitize your block is to use mineral oil on its surface. Since the block is made out of wood, this type of oil will help you disinfect its surface and it will not ruin the block either.

The block should always be wiped off with a damp sponge or towel after it has been used. Also, do not use an excessive amount of chemicals on the block when you are cleaning it. Overusing chemicals on the blocks surface can ruin the wood that the block is made from. Therefore, you should steer clear from using bleach, Clorox or anything of that nature.

For deep cleaning, you will need to scrape off a layer of wood that is located on the block. Generally, you can choose to use a dull utility knife to perform this task with. Also, after the wood has been scraped off accordingly, pour a decent amount of vinegar onto its surface.

Keep in mind, that the vinegar should sit on the blocks surface for approximately five minutes. After the five minutes has passed rinse the block off and dry it accordingly. Never leave water sitting on the block for too long, or the block will lose its durability.
