It’s Terribly Exciting Now That The Task In The Kitchen Is Done And We Are Left To Something Like Civilisation. It Feels Like It’s Been An Age Coming

I can’t think about a great deal today. It’s all too thrilling for words and my knowledge of English cannot quite extend to adequately describe it. The fact is that the chaps have completed installing my new kitchen and it is magnificent. Exactly as we planned it, pictured it and intended it. And there is not a Weber bbq in sight. While the job has been progressing, eight days in all to install it because it was a sizable job, we’ve been missing the developments that progress has made in the last century or so. No dishwasher, no sink, let alone running water and, worst of all, no cooking apparatus.

Everything that had been in the kitchen has been transferred into the dining room and stacked away as best we could, with the things we surely wouldn’t required placed in the darkest corners or under tables or chairs. Things we could need filled the tops of the tables and chairs and wherever that might be near to hand. The stuff we certainly would have to have were stacked onto dressers, sideboards and stuffed into cupboards. Lots of the cooking utensils were put into a carrier bag and put out by the Weber bbq which, under a smaller set of charcoal grills would be the only go we would have of cooking.

As it turned out, the rain prevented us using the charcoal grills since we would not be able to get the charcoals burning sufficiently and for a couple of evenings it was too nippy for the Weber gas grills so we had to buy and live on anything we could fit into the microwave. These were mostly pre-cooked which I hadn’t had in almost 10 years and the first Mrs Izzard even longer. And we were astonished by them. Keeping in mind that we love cooking, which is one reason why we’ve had the new one (the other reason the old one was literally falling to bits) these microwave dishes were unutterably awful! They were utterly soulless, utterly joyless and so brightly coloured that we could not steel ourselves to read the list of ingredients.

The new cooker and ovens, now plumbed in, working and beautiful is a Stoves Range with 7 gas rings, 2 gas ovens, an electric grill and a slow cooker. I adore it and it’s turned out to be a delight to cook on as we have rapidly discovered when I cooked lunch of spaghetti Bolognese as a quick test of the rings and my wife made some Indian snacks dishes this afternoon for some mates who are calling over this evening to inspect.

We were planning to be able to serve up some home brewed beer but it isn’t ready as it hasn’t cleared. It’s very close but just not quite there. And it’s not bad for my initial go, and by the time summer comes round next year, I intend to be very proficient at beer making and also be able to create a tasty sausage as well as I bought a mincer and sausage maker. All of which might mean that when the Weber gas grills come out of the garage we should be able to give a fabulous party when we also resurrect the annual thrash for friends and family.
