Martini Flavored With Lychee

You can use the fresh lychee fruit in your martini as it has a wonderful fragrance and adds a great flavor to the drink. The lychee martini must have the original smell and the flavor of the fruit and when drinking it one must be transported to the magical, tropical countries where this fruit was first seen. Lychee syrup or lychee liqueur can be used but since the flavoring should be really original, it is preferred to use the lychee syrup in the lychee martini. Lychee liqueur is made in different brands and they are mostly processed and hence this may impart an artificial flavoring to the drink which is not desirable.

Natural lychee syrup can be made by using fresh lychees and gives a natural yellow tinge imparting great flavor and color to the drink. Don’t use syrup from lychees in cans as this is a little cloudy. Lychees used in cans are the inferior varieties that were not good enough to be sold fresh and the metal of the can could have tainted the fruit. Hence this should be the last resort. Lychee juice can be used.

When you garnish your lychee martini you can peel and seed the lychees on a skewer but it may not be available throughout the year as lychee fruits have a season only for a few months. Hence you can garnish the lychee martini with frozen lychees which are almost as good having the flavor and taste of the fresh fruit in them. Pan Asian food markets always have a stock of these frozen lychees. Here again, canned fruit must be the absolute last resort. Use a high quality of syrup and when using the canned fruit, take care to rinse it well in absolutely clean water before adding the garnishing.

Add a mint leaf to the lychee martini as it imparts freshness and a green look. The martini glass rim can be decorated with crystallized ginger to produce an oriental effect and give an impression of the mountainous forests of South China where this fruit originated from.

If you choose to use vodka, ensure that it is of the highest quality. You may use champagne instead or even sake or soju which is a special Asian alcohol which is produced from rice and barley. You can add some grenadine, a pomegranate juice, or cranberry juice to give a red appearance of ripe lychees to your lychee martini. Other fruit juices and vermouth can also be blended as different types of a lychee martini.
