People undergoing managed levels of sleep deprivation shows serious differences in their metabolism rates. The results revealed that there is a change in glucose tolerance which is one of the main indicators to help determine if someone is suffering from diabetes. The personnel undergone this test displayed glucose tolerance of someone in the initial stages of diabetes instead of having the usual glucose tolerance level for their age. This test seem to have shown that sleep deprivation can upset the body’s ability to metabolize glucose.

Lack of sleep is speculated to have played a key role in the triggering of diabetes and this is also considered as a main contributing element in the growing statistic of diabetic patients in advanced countries. This research has noted many other symptoms which is inclusive of hypertension, speedy aging process of the skin, retarded metabolism rate that may eventually cause obesity and also many problems associated with memory. As the research only lasted 16 days, a short duration typical for such study, it is anyone’s guess that the recorded side effects and symptoms could have deteriorated further if the sleep deprivation test duration was prolonged.

The study is actually considered rather timely, mainly because most of the working population spends less than the recommended eight hours of sleep. While the difference of eight hours to the average sleep time of five hours may not seem that significant, the results emerged from test subjects who were subjected to just five hours of sleep per 24-hour period.
