Pizzelle Cookies Are A Sweet Treat
Pizzelle cookies are not only rich with flavor and variation, but also with history. In Italian, the word means 'small, flat, and round.' They were first made in south-central area of what is now Abruzzo in the eighth century. Residents of the town of Salle celebrate the festival of Beato Roberto every July, walking down the street carrying the treat hung on branches as an offering. In the town of Cocullo, the celebrators eat the little treat during the festival of Domenico, their patron saint.
