Some Tips On How To Feed Your Picky Eater
Previously, it was a normal practice for parents to insist that their child clean their plates no matter what. Thankfully we’re no longer so rigid in our views, we now welcome alternative ways to encourage our child to eat healthily and taste unfamiliar dishes. Parents naturally want their children to eat properly, but some children refuse to try anything new. Try these tricks to handle a picky eater and make mealtimes more fun.
You child will be more encouraged to eat if they see their favorite animal on their plate or if the face looks like someone they know. Many have already tried this and some of the parents will tell you that it might not work. What you can do is give them a selection of choices. Include a small quantity of the new food on his plate along with the food he likes to eat, try including two to three different foods so he can choose. Repeat the same for everyone on the table. Each member of the family has to eat at least one of the three new food and that includes your child – this way it will seem like a game where everyone is included and not something that’s being forced on him.
Intrigue them with the new food. Cut small pieces of food that they like onto a plate, but add in one or two that they do not normally eat. Then tell them you’re going to play a game and they have to close their eyes while you place something in their mouth. Then they have to guess what they’re eating. When they say they can’t tell what’s in their mouth, ask them how it tastes and if they liked it, and when they open their eyes show them that it’s the exact same food that they say they don’t like.
You’re child might also be encouraged when they see their friends eating all kinds of foods, it would at least entice them to try out some new dishes. You can also allow your child to go play at his friend’s house, there he might encounter some food he hadn’t tried before but would be too shy to tell his friend’s mom that he doesn’t like it.
Surprise you child the next time you go to the restaurant, tell him that this one time he can order from the ‘adult’ menu. There is one condition though – they have to eat at least half of the meal. Can you guess what they’ll order?
Don’t worry too much if your child picks at his food, at least their getting some form of nourishment. As long as your child is healthy and growing, you should not pressurise them too much. You shouldn’t push food too much on your child, it could have some very adverse effects later on.
