Tacos- From Mexico With Love
They started out as tortillas with small fish fillings, made their way to American kitchens and changed their name to tacos. Its just another dish that has its roots in traditional Mexico. Currently it is found throughout the country and the regions surrounding it, with the rest of the world not shying away from it either. It has diversified in variety, owing to the very many kinds of fillings that can be used. From rare ones like seafood to more locally available like ground beef and carne asada, tacos have become an American staple. And as you would expect, there are gourmet recipes of the dish as well.
Choose a taco recipe by the kind of filling it needs. In American and Canada, tacos usually have a hard shell, making them crunchier and more fun to eat. This idea started in the mid 1950s and its been used ever since. The tortillas are held in a U-shape as they are deep fried. This explains their shape. Right now, almost every average restaurant serves tacos. They can be enjoyed as a snack or as a full meal, depending on the occasion and the kind of recipe.
A taco dish is hardly one that should take you long to make. With your tortillas ready, preparing the fillings is the easy part. Tortillas are made with tortilla dough which is kneaded, rolled into balls, flattened and finally fried.
When you are making ground beef tortillas, preparing the ground beef is very easy. Its more common because of increased availability as compared to chicken. Assemble all the ingredients first- half a kilo of beef, an onion and some pepper. This is for cooking the beef. Then for your taco seasoning, you can have as many ingredients as you like- oregano, chili, pepper, cumin, paprika etc.
The first step is browning the beef, before adding the onions and the pepper. Stir until the pink in the beef is gone. Then add the seasoning ingredients, some water and simmer till ready. Taco making cannot get any easier than that. You are at liberty to add ingredients as you become more competent in making the dish. Adding guacamole, sour cream and garnishes such as cilantro and salsa can give you a whole new experience.
Tacos are a high calorie diet, if you are always keen to calculate your calorific intake. They are not meant to be a meal taken everyday, but even with that they do give the taste buds a treat that is out of the ordinary.
