The Kung Pow Pepper Will Spice Up Any Meal

Chili peppers have been on the menu for humans since ancient times but the Kung Pow pepper is new to the culinary world. This hybrid fruit was first made available in 2000 and it has been gaining in popularity ever since. This pepper is high in iron, potassium and magnesium, just like other red chilis. It is rich in vitamin C and carotene and is a good source of various B vitamins and vitamin A.

Peppers are useful beyond the nutritional value they provide. When extracted, capsaicin is prepared as a topical analgesic. These topical agents are used to treat arthritis, headaches and other maladies.

These peppers will grow green and turn bright red when ready for harvest. They look very much like cayenne peppers but are longer and more tapered. The fruit will typically grow up to six inches long and roughly one inch wide. Seeds may be grown indoors using a quality starting medium. They should located where they have access to unfiltered light. Rotating the plants weekly will ensure they get ample light to grow evenly.

When replanting outside, choose a sunny location and place them at least twelve inches apart. They should go in the ground approximately one month after the last frost. Water at the stalk base and allow enough time for the water to soak the roots. The plants will adapt to any type of soil from mildly alkaline to mildly acidic.

This type of pepper will also thrive if grown inside as long as it receives enough light. Plants will be mature in approximately three months. They will typically grow between three and four feet high.

Gardeners should take precautions when handling peppers. Hands should be protected by gardening gloves. Be careful not to touch the eyes or any other body part before the hands can be thoroughly washed.

These peppers rank between 7,000 and 12,000 on the Scoville Heat Scale. The Hidalgo and Serrano are similar in ranking. The jalapeno is quite a bit milder and ranks between 2,500 and 5,000 on the same scale.

Picked fresh off the plant, these peppers may be used in fresh salads and salsas. They are used for flavoring in many types of cuisine from southeast Asia, especially Thai food. Many cooks like to use them in stir fry recipes. Fresh peppers may be pickled and jarred. Crushed dried peppers will add snap to pizza or any other dish.

The Kung Pow pepper offers a whole new way to add heat to any type of food. Anyone who has trouble locating them in a local grocery store will be able to raise their own. In just a few months they will have fresh peppers ready to liven up any meal.
