The Origin of Potato Salad

One Of My favorite things to eat is Potato Salad, preferably Ribs and potato salad. On a nice summer afternoon surrounded by family and friends, I remember that an interesting conversation stirred up about what type of potato salad recipe is the best and who preferred what type. That got me thinking about the origin of potato salad and how many different variations have turned up since then.

I discovered that the spud was recognized in South America by Spanish visitors who transported it to their native lands within the sixteenth century. Merchants and farmers ended up being the reason why this veggie became known to Europe.

when thinking of where to begin in finding where the potato salad began, my thoughts would be on Germany, a country ample in potato’s and a good amount of recipes to make them, its almost bound to be among the first to make the meal. At about the second half of the 19th century America became acquainted with potato salad possibly by means of German immigrants.

There are a wide range of versions of potato salad, European type is dished up heated which is also known as German potato salad. This variation won’t include any mayo but could often have vinegar, onions and bacon.

The U.S. version of potato salad will include mayo, contrary to the European or German type but might also incorporate all kinds of other elements based upon who’s producing the food. Ingredients can cover nearly anything from pickles, peppers, celery ,and so much more, there are so many possibilities. Its a pleasant meal to make and indeed my all time favorite.

Needless to say that potato salad is a timeless classic, served at picnics, parties and gatherings. It has been around for a very long time and will continue to entice our tables for many years to come. With its recipe ever changing its fun to see what will turn up next.
