The Replacement Kitchen Is Progressing Nicely And We Can’t Wait To Be Allowed To Go Back To Some Resemblance Of Routine

Autumn seems to be struggling to get moving. Maybe summer thinks that it was a bit mean to us towards the end of its turn and has popped back to pay penance for it, or maybe was angry and just thought that autumn was making fun of us with the weather at the Ryder Cup last week and has decided to give us one last blast. Out with the barbeque say I!

And for us it’s a blessing since just now we’re roughing it in our own house as the strong men are right this minute fitting our new kitchen which means that we don’t have stove, oven or sink. Currently, all our stuff is in the dining room with all the things we think we won’t need placed in the distant corner with the things we either definitely will and might need towards the front. Out on the patio, prepared to be pressed into action if required is the gas barbeque. And if the weather stays clear through to around 5 o’clock, I might well put it into employment because for the past 3 nights we’ve been making supper with the microwave as the only way.

We might well have a barbeque on Saturday night anyway, the fantastic cooker has now arrived but the gasman coming to install it won’t get here until Saturday afternoon in any case and because there is no surety that the cooker will be functional, it isn’t worth planning anything other than rustling up some burgers and buying the kebabs in. We we’d make our own sausages but for two reasons: 1, we have not experimented with the sausage maker yet and 2, we haven’t got the ingredients or adequate cleaning kit to be able to do it.

It was a bit of a task pulling the gas barbeque out of the garage last weekend as we were moving things about to make somewhere for the kitchen boxes to go when they were delivered and so it was handy to get the big fella out of the way. We could have got the charcoal barbeque but the challenge there is that we do not have any charcoal briquettes. And even if we did, I cannot be bothered with lots going on anyway, to have to tidy up a charcoal barbeque at the end.

In fact the notion of having the barbeque becomes ever more appealing as the week goes on because we’ve been eating tinned and processed food and we’re aghast that a person is able to feed on this rubbish all the time. Although it tastes alright, there’s no notion at the end of any enjoyment or interest during the meal. We haven’t dared to study the ingredients but what is for sure is that we can’t wait to get back to eating actual food again.

And on that topic, we are going to be experimenting with alternative ways of getting food in. As well as looking to have milk delivered regularly, there is also a farm nearby which will provide a bag of seasonal fruit and veg each week which is interesting. If we have anything left over I can make soups or chutneys in the new kitchen.

This will happen just as soon as it’s all over. As of about 10 minutes ago, the sink now has functioning taps so we can at last stop washing up in a tiny bowl on a table. Civilisation is returning!
