Cholesterol has always had a bad name but is everything that we hear about cholesterol true? Well the answer to that question is a resounding no! For example we never got told that cholesterol actually helps us to survive and that without cholesterol in our body we would probably die.

It could be said that cholesterol is important in the fight against depression. This is because it helps our brains usage of serotonin which as some people are aware helps to fight off such disorders as depression and apathy. Without serotonin many people may start to become lethargic and unable to do things through lack of energy. This in effect can lead to a form of clinical depression.
This is not the only thing that cholesterol is good for though. Cholesterol helps fight our bodies’ free radicals as it is an antioxidant. Atherosclerosis is one of the many diseases that cholesterol prevents us from contracting due to it helping to keep our body tissue flexible.
Cholesterol molecules can change quite quickly in our bodies. Normally measured as HDL (high density) or LDL (low density) these molecules are very similar in retrospect. This is because an HDL molecule can often dump its fat into one of our cells and change back to a LDL molecule. Likewise a LDL molecule can get filled up with some fatty foods and become an HDL molecule.
We have always been led to believe that eating fatty foods can increase our cholesterol levels significantly but this is just one of the many myths around about cholesterol.
