Through extensive research plus some experience from my wife, I have put up this simple yet useful guide for those people who are planning to pursue a profession in cooking. It is my hope that this guide will help you to achieve your objective to be a Personal Chef in the future.

Deciding to become a Personal Chef is a very important decision it can mean starting a career in cooking or changing careers altogether. For some aspiring personal chefs they will be choosing a career path entirely different than what they have been trained and educated for. Becoming a Personal Chef allows you to combine your interests in cooking, entrepreneurship and overall enjoyment in life into an exciting and fulfilling cooking career.

Even if you’re not interested in personal chef training, you can learn more about the culinary industry, cooking tips and kitchen products.

To start with you have to make sure you have the right equipment. A personal chef has to have good quality sharp knives. Don’t worry sharp knives actually help you avoid injury. I know it is counter intuitive but it is true. A dull knife gets stuck and causes an uneven cutting which can result in slippage and injury.

Make a list of all the basic items you need on a regular basis. But this list can differ from chef to chef as some may prefer using a feed processor that hand blenders, etc. The best tip in choosing the best items is to observe what you use when you are cooking in your kitchen. You must take note and you can have a good idea for how much you use the various kitchen appliances, pots, or pans after a few weeks. After you are done selecting your items, you will know what you will need for your portable pantry.

A portable pantry is composed of a few buckets. You can use the Rubbermaid ones. You can use a portable pantry to store your pans, pots, and other items for easy transportation to your cook dates. Generally, you can divide the buckets to categories- wets, dry, and appliances. My wife usually uses the small ones for the dry stuff, the medium-sized buckets for wets, and the larger ones for the appliances.

So, now that you are good with your kitchen items, you must make certain that you have a safety class. Safety classes are offered by many education places. These classes are very helpful as it shows you have done your due diligence and you must be amazed on how much you will learn. Food safety uses the common sense, but not totally all.

I highly recommend practice sessions. Find some of your friends who like your cooking and perform a cook date. You must go through the process. You can interview them and find out what they do or don’t like. The information you can gather can be used as basis for your proposed meal of the week. This will greatly help as you practice mixing and matching your meals and sides. Once the meal has been made and your clients have approved it, you can definitely get started.

On the cook date, you must bring with you your pantry and get started by doing your shopping early so that you will have enough time for cooking. Plan the right number of people and serving sizes. You should discuss these things during the interview with your clients. Once you are cooking, you must need to pay attention to the time and make sure that you do things in an apt order. This is why I recommend the practice sessions. You should not run out of time cooking nor find out that you have made something prematurely or late.

Pursuing a career as a Personal Chef can be truly fulfilling for you and for many people. I hope that I have provided the training to help you reach your objectives!!
