Understanding Meat Humidors and Their Uses

When you hear the word humidor, chances are good that you think of cigars. However, humidors are not used only for cigars and tobacco. In fact, meat humidors offer a lot of benefits for those who want to prepare specific types of foods. The operation of these devices is the same as for humidors intended for storing tobacco – they allow the user to control the temperature and humidity within the device. Why might this be important for meat? There are quite a few different uses, actually.

One interesting use of this technology is in the area of food preservation. For instance, meat humidors can be used to help age and preserve meat ranging from fish to venison to beef. Even vegetables and funguses can be preserved and aged in this way. Why would you want to age meat in a humidor and how does it happen?

Actually, aging anything in a humidor requires the same basic components. You need control of the humidity, control of the temperature and a bit of time. To control the humidity, both humidifiers and hygrometers are used, though not always at the same time or with the same types of food.

As mentioned, hygrometers are the tools that allow users to monitor humidity levels in these environments. However, there are many different types of hygrometers on the market, and not all will work with meat humidors. For instance, alcohol hygrometers are used for brewing beer and other alcoholic beverages, while cigar hygrometers are meant for help in storing and aging cigars.

In all cases, though, a functioning and properly calibrated hygrometer is an essential consideration. Without these tools, humidors are not easily maintained, regardless of type or construction materials, even if they have high levels of insulation.
