What’s The Difference Between Miracle Whip And Mayonnaise

I’ve often wondered about the difference between mayonnaise and Miracle Whip. We were raised with Mayonnaise and I prefer it, but wanted to know what exactly is in Miracle Whip that I’m not so crazy about. This all started back in 1756 when French ruler French under Louis Franois Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, duc de Richelieu, captured Mahn on the Spanish-held island of Minorca. In honor of the victory the duc’s chef created a new dressing for his master which was Mahonnaise, but Americans didn’t get to taste it until 1905 at Richard Hellmann’s New York deli.

About 30 years later Miracle Whip made its debut at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Charles Chapman evenly blended regular mayonnaise with cheaper dressings and more than 20 different spices plus sugar to create “Salad Miracles with Miracle Whip Salad Dressing”. So Miracle Whip is basically like a salad dressing that uses mayo. It contains other ingredients as well to make the taste sweeter. According to Kraft they came up with Miracle whip from their own experimentation but others claim that it was sold to the company by an Illinoise caf owner back in 1931.

Mayonnaise is often the base for a wide variety of salad dressings and sandwich spreads. Its primary ingredients include: raw egg yolks, oil, lemon juice or vinegar, and spices. Mayo, which is short for mayonnaise, is not only sold by companies but people often make it at home too and add their own touch and flavor. It is available in a lot of locations across the globe. Despite the differences in how it’s made and the added ingredients into the recipe depending on the geographical region, it is still largely the same.

Some common dishes made in the U.S. using mayonnaise as a main ingredient are tuna fish salad, potato salad, salmon salad, egg salad and macaroni salad just to name a few. In Western Europe mayonnaise is often served with French fries or chips, especially in the Netherlands and Belgium, Germany. It is also served with hard-boiled eggs or cold chicken in France, the UK, Russia, Poland, Ukraine and the Netherlands. Since mayonnaise became widely accessible in the 1980s Chileans have used it on hot dogs, french fries, loco and boiled chopped potatoes – a salad commonly known as papas mayo. Chile is the world’s third major per capita consumer of mayonnaise behind Latin America which is the first. Mayo is quite popular in Russia where they make it with sunflower seed oil giving it a very distinctive flavor. That is the only market in Europe where more mayo is sold than ketchup by volume.

The main difference between mayo and Miracle Whip and mayonnaise are the sweeteners – sugar and high fructose corn syrup. They are the fourth and fifth ingredients used to make Miracle Whip. Mayo is sold by a wide variety of companies, but Miracle Whip is only sold by Kraft. Mayonnaise is very popular all around the world in one form or another while Miracle Whip is largely popular in Canada.
